Understanding Gum Disease: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

Gum disease is extremely common in the UK, yet many people don't realise they have it. Early detection and treatment can prevent serious complications, including tooth loss. Understanding the warning signs helps you seek help before the problem becomes severe.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease occurs when bacteria in plaque infect your gums. It starts as gingivitis, where gums become inflamed and bleed easily. If untreated, it progresses to periodontitis, where the infection spreads beneath the gumline, damaging the bone supporting your teeth.

Warning Signs

Watch for these symptoms:

• Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
• Persistent bad breath or bad taste
• Swollen, tender, or red gums
• Gums pulling away from teeth
• Loose teeth or changes in how your bite feels

Some people have no obvious symptoms, which is why regular check-ups are crucial. Your dentist can spot early gum disease before you notice anything wrong.

What Causes It?

Poor oral hygiene is the primary cause—plaque builds up and hardens into tartar. Smoking significantly increases your risk and makes treatment less effective. Other factors include diabetes, hormonal changes, stress, and certain medications.

Treatment Options

Early-stage gingivitis responds well to improved brushing and flossing combined with professional cleaning. Your dentist removes tartar buildup, allowing gums to heal. More advanced periodontitis might require scaling and root planing, where your dentist cleans beneath the gumline.

In severe cases, surgical treatment may be necessary. However, these advanced interventions are often preventable through early treatment and good home care.

Prevention Strategies

Brush twice daily with proper technique, floss every day, and visit your dentist regularly. If you smoke, quitting dramatically improves your gum health. Managing conditions like diabetes also helps prevent gum disease.

Gum disease doesn't have to be permanent. With appropriate treatment and commitment to better oral hygiene, most people can reverse early-stage disease and maintain their natural teeth for life.
